Por qué un Día Mundial del Turismo
Este día mundial se conmemora el 27 de septiembre de cada año. El propósito es concienciar a la comunidad internacional sobre la importancia del turismo, debido a sus aspectos sociales, culturales, políticos y económicos. En la celebración se abordan los retos mundiales que se recogen en la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible y se resalta la contribución que el sector turístico en el logro de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.
La Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT), la agencia especializada de las Naciones Unidas encargada de promover el turismo responsable, sostenible y universalmente accesible, invita a todos los interesados a participar en la celebración, en países de origen o destinos vacacionales.
Lema y celebración oficial
El Día Mundial del Turismo se celebra con actos y actividades entorno a un tema que elige anualmente la Asamblea General de la OMT, siguiendo las recomendaciones del Consejo Ejecutivo de dicha organización.
Cada 27 de septiembre, el Secretario General de la OMT preside los actos oficiales y aprovecha la ocasión para enviar al mundo un mensaje de concienciación.

Proclamación del Día
En septiembre de 1979, la Asamblea General de la OMT, durante su tercer periodo de sesiones, que celebró en Torremolinos (España), decidió instituir el Día Mundial del Turismo. Las celebraciones comenzaron al año siguiente, el 27 de septiembre de 1980. Esa fecha se eligió para que coincidiera con el aniversario de un hito importante en el turismo mundial: la aprobación de los Estatutos de la OMT 
el 27 de septiembre de 1970.
Ese día de finales de septiembre es particularmente apropiado porque coincide con el final de la temporada alta de vacaciones del hemisferio norte y el comienzo en la mitad sur del globo. The timing of World Tourism Day is particularly appropriate in that it comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.
Proclamación de 2017 Año Internacional del Turismo Sostenible para el Desarrollo
La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, reunida el 22 de diciembre de 2015 durante su 70º período de sesiones, declaró 2017 Año Internacional del Turismo Sostenible para el Desarrollo en su resolución A/RES/70/193. En ella, «alienta a todos los Estados, al sistema de las Naciones Unidas y a todos los demás agentes a que aprovechen el Año Internacional para promover medidas a todos los niveles, en particular mediante la cooperación internacional, y a que apoyen el turismo sostenible como forma de promover y acelerar el desarrollo sostenible, especialmente la erradicación de la pobreza».

About World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, invites all interested parties to take part on 27 September each year in the special celebrations taking place in their respective country or holiday destination.
World Tourism Day theme and official celebrations
World Tourism Day is celebrated with appropriate events on themes selected by the UNWTO General Assembly, on the recommendation of the UNWTO Executive Council.
The UNWTO Secretary-General issues a message each year to mark the occasion and chairs the official celebrations.

Establishment of World Tourism Day
It was at its third session (Torremolinos, Spain, September 1979), that the UNWTO General Assembly decided to institute World Tourism Day, commencing in the year 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970.
The timing of World Tourism Day is particularly appropriate in that it comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.
Declaration of 2017 as International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
On 22 December 2015, during its 70th session, the United Nations General Assembly designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development through its resolution A/RES/70/193, in which it “encourages all States, the United Nations system and all other actors to take advantage of the International Year to promote actions at all levels, including through international cooperation, and to support sustainable tourism as a means of promoting and accelerating sustainable development, especially poverty eradication.”
