El Presidente de los Países de la Mancomunidad Fernando González Nicolás, destacó que la visita del primer ministro de Jamaica relanzará las relaciones bilaterales con esa nación y el resto del Caribe, y añadió que el intercambio comercial con esa isla asciende a unos 103 millones de dólares en el último año, siendo unos de los principales socios de negocios de la región.

El presidente de la  Mancomunidad afirmó que esta es una indicación del interés que tienen los jamaiquinos en incrementar las relaciones políticas y comerciales con la República Dominicana.

González Nicolás apuntó que Jamaica tiene significativas inversiones en el país en el sector financiero y el agroindustrial, entre las que citó al Banco JMMB y al productor de bananos Jamaica Producers, ubicado en la línea del Noroeste, precisando que los dominicanos por su parte tienen inversiones en Jamaica en las áreas de fertilizantes y producción energía eléctrica, siendo los dominicanos los mayores generadores de electricidad privada en ese país.

“Es oportuno recordar que Jamaica es país miembro de la Mancomunidad, que también la República Dominicana participa junto a esa nación en el CARIFORUM, en la Asociación de Estados del Caribe, entre otras asociaciones”, precisó el presidente de la Mesa Redonda.

En el encuentro con el dignatario extranjero participaron los presidentes de asociaciones del sector privado, entre ellos Joel Santos, de Hoteles y Turism Roberto Herrera, de la Industria Eléctrica  Osmar Benítez, de la Junta Agroempresarial Dominicana y Simón Suárez, vicepresidente del Grupo Punta Cana.

Además, Guillermo Arancibia, gerente general del Banco JMMB; Luis Asilis, de Metro Group; Álvaro Sousa Sevilla, de Exportadores  Avelino Rodríguez, de Magna Motors, entre otros representantes del empresariado, miembros de la Mesa Redonda y diplomáticos.

Además del primer ministro de Jamaica, Andrew Holness, la comitiva estuvo integrada por Kamina Johnson Smith, ministra de relaciones exteriores de ese país; Edmund Bartlett, ministro de turismo; Nigel Clarke, embajador para asuntos económicos; Aubyn Hill, senador, entre otros.

Nicolás ofreció este martes las palabras de bienvenida en un encuentro privado con empresarios de Jamaica y de República Dominicana con el primer ministro de ese país, Andrew Holness, organizado por Mesa de la Mancomunidad en el hotel Sheratón, el cual tuvo como objetivo de que el mandatario intercambiara con los empresarios y conociera formas de que su gobierno pueda contribuir a aumentar el comercio y la inversión.

The Commonwealth President said this shows the interest Jamaicans have in increasing political and commercial relations with the Dominican Republic.

Gonzalez Nicolás noted that Jamaica has important investments in the country in the financial and agro-industrial sectors, among which he mentioned the JMMB Bank and banana producer Jamaica Producers, located in the Northwest, noting also that Dominicans for their part have investments in Jamaica in the areas of fertilizers and electricity production, Dominicans being the largest private electricity generators in that country.

«It´s important to remember that Jamaica is a member of the Commonwealth and that the Dominican Republic also participates with that country in CARIFORUM, the Association of Caribbean States, among other associations,» said the president of the Round Table.

The meeting was attended by presidents of private sector associations, such as Joel Santos, from Hotels and Tourism, Roberto Herrera from the Electricity Industry, Osmar Benítez from the Dominican Agribusiness Board and Simón Suárez, vice president of the Punta Cana Group.

In addition, Guillermo Arancibia, general manager of the JMMB Bank, Luis Asilis from the Metro Group, Álvaro Sousa Sevilla from Exporters,  Avelino Rodríguez from Magna Motors, among other representatives of the business community, members of the Round Table and diplomats.

Besides the Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the delegation was comprised of Kamina Johnson Smith, the country’s foreign minister, Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Nigel Clarke, ambassador for economic affairs and Senator Aubyn Hill, among others.

Nicolás offered words of welcome on Tuesday at the Hotel Sheraton at a private meeting between Jamaican and Dominican businessmen and Jamaican Premier Andrew Holness, organized by Commonwealth Bureau and aimed at dialogue between the head of state and the businessmen and finding ways for his government to contribute to increasing trade and investment.
