21.8% of foreign investment in the last 6 years channeled into hotel industry

Foreign investment exceeded US$ 2,600 million.

In the last 6 years 21.8% of direct foreign investment entering the Dominican republic has been focused on the hotel, real estate and tourism industry in general, and reached a sum total of over US$ 2,600 according to official figures.

In the case of the tourism industry, the bigger investments didn´t just reach hotel projects but were also geared towards the real estate industry which captured a great deal of the investments.

On the other hand, foreign investment in shopping centers, golf course and in general improvements to the country´s main destination tourism infrastructure has increased, according to a note published in “El Día”

In total, during the period under scrutiny , Dominican Republic received US$ 12,213.9 million fundamentally channeled into tourism, commerce and industry, mining and telecommunications.

The US is still Dominican Republic´s biggest investor.

In the period in question, American contributed US$ 2,953.53 million, equaling 24.2% of the total investments mentioned above.

The US$ 2,126.3 million contributed by Canada are in second position Spain takes third place with US$ 1,884.3 million.
